Trigger finger, or stenosing tenosynovitis, is a frustrating condition where a finger gets locked in a bent position before suddenly snapping straight. It happens due to inflammation in the tendons, making finger movement difficult and painful. When I first started experiencing it, I was shocked at how much it affected my daily life simple tasks like holding my phone, typing, or even gripping a cup became painful.

Doctors suggested treatments like steroid injections and even surgery, but I wanted to explore natural healing methods first. Thankfully, with patience and consistent care, I managed to heal my trigger finger without medical intervention. If you’re looking for natural remedies to deal with this condition, let me share the exact steps that worked for me.

Identifying the Cause of My Trigger Finger

Before jumping to treatments, I wanted to understand what was causing my trigger finger in the first place. Here’s what I found:

Once I knew what was causing my condition, I made lifestyle changes to prevent further damage and focused on natural healing.

Resting My Finger and Modifying Activities

One of the first things I did was give my hand proper rest. I reduced repetitive activities that strained my fingers, such as excessive phone usage and tight gripping. I switched to voice typing whenever possible and made a conscious effort to avoid using my affected finger.

I also changed how I held objects for instance, instead of gripping with my fingers, I tried to use my palm for support. These small changes gave my tendons a break and prevented further aggravation.

Warm Water Soaking – A Simple Yet Effective Remedy

A warm water soak became part of my daily routine. Here’s how I did it:

This simple routine helped reduce stiffness and made it easier for me to move my finger without pain.

Finger Exercises and Stretches

Stretching was a game-changer for me. These three exercises were the most effective:

Doing these exercises twice a day improved my flexibility and reduced pain.

Mustard Oil Massage – The Indian Home Remedy That Worked

Mustard oil is widely used in Indian households for joint and muscle pain, so I decided to try it. Every night before sleeping, I warmed a little mustard oil and massaged my finger gently. This improved blood circulation and reduced stiffness.

Ayurvedic and Herbal Remedies

I turned to Ayurveda for additional healing support. These three remedies helped significantly:

Splinting My Finger at Night

One mistake I made initially was sleeping with my fingers curled up, which made my trigger finger worse. I started using a homemade splint (a popsicle stick wrapped with a bandage) to keep my finger straight at night. This prevented it from getting locked in the morning and allowed for better healing.

Acupressure and Reflexology

Acupressure is a traditional Indian healing method that works wonders. I used my thumb to apply pressure to specific points on my palm and wrist. This helped release tension in my tendons and improved movement over time.

I also rolled a small acupressure ball in my hand every day, which further helped in reducing pain.

Dietary Changes for Faster Recovery

Healing from within is just as important as external remedies. I changed my diet to include:

These small dietary improvements played a crucial role in my recovery.

Epsom Salt Soaks for Extra Relief

Twice a week, I soaked my hand in warm water with Epsom salt. The magnesium in the salt helped relax my tendons and muscles, making movement smoother and less painful.

Yoga and Hand Mudras for Recovery

Since I practice yoga, I incorporated specific postures and hand mudras (symbolic gestures) to aid healing. The Gyan Mudra (touching the tip of the index finger to the thumb) and Prithvi Mudra (touching the tip of the ring finger to the thumb) were particularly helpful in improving hand flexibility.

It took me around three months to heal completely, but I remained patient. Unlike steroid injections that provide quick relief but don’t treat the root cause, these natural remedies focused on long-term healing.

Final Thoughts

Today, I am free from trigger finger, and I didn’t need medical treatments. If you’re struggling with this condition, I highly recommend trying these natural methods before opting for medical interventions. Each person’s body is different, so find what works best for you.

If you live in India and suffer from trigger finger, take advantage of our rich natural healing traditions. Ayurveda, yoga, and simple lifestyle modifications can make a big difference.
